Zola In Paradise

Have you been watching Masterpiece?  They're now showing "The Paradise" based on Zola's Au Bonheur des Dames, part of the Rougon-Macquart series

Free promo for the BBC and PBS Stations

At first I was going to skip the whole thing because the BBC changed the location from my beloved Paris to Northern England (no offence to any of my Brit friends).   But it works. I guess it was easier than having all the actors use a French accent.

I adore Zola.  I began reading the novels because most of the stories take place in Paris.  I guess that's as good a reason as any.  Same for Balzac, Victor Hugo......well, almost everything I read.

All this to say even though they took Paris out of the story, I'm still addicted to the series.  I can understand a bit of artistic license.  HOWEVER, I will NEVER watch "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" if they switch the location to South Bend, Indiana and Quasimodo wears a football helmet.

  1. It's nice of you to use the word "classy". So much nicer than "gassy". The only reality shows I watch are the decorating and antique shows. Do they count? They aren't fighting alligators or anything like that.....

  2. I don't consider decorating shows or antique shows "reality shows". I watch those as well. Yeah, I was referring to shows with alligators, and home wreckers, and families like the Kardashians that seemingly have no known skills.

  3. Completely agree with you English actors doing French accents would sound annoying to me. I have not watched the program, it was on at a bad time for me.
