Let’s Keep It To Ourselves Shall We?

Walking outside at noon today, enjoying this unusually warm weather for Montréal in March, I passed the gym. (“Passed” being the key word here). And there they were – all these fitness people on their bicycles separated from the sidewalk by that big wall of very clean non-glare reveal-all glass. Maybe it’s just me, but if I have to shed a few pounds, I really don’t want everyone on the street watching me huff and puff my way to health. Wouldn’t you rather people say “you look fabulous” than “I saw you working out in your baggy shorts working up a good sweat”? Now if the view was, say, the ocean......that would be different. But these people are facing a busy commercial urban street. Does facing the traffic make them move faster? I don't know what the thinking is here.

Then, I passed the hair salon. Again, people with their hair all wet and parted funny, some with hunks of hair wrapped in tin foil looking like they just landed…..all in full view of their co-workers out having a stroll in the sun.

I don’t know, but there are some things I would rather not share and my roots and flabby bits are right up there at the top of the list.

So, I’m boycotting all these glass walled services. I don’t need to have visual stimulation every second of the day and I don't want to be the entertainment for pedestrians. I can close my eyes and think while having my hair done. I can listen to music while exercising (well, not me….but you know what I mean, it's an option for other people).

  1. I think I know where your coming from. Though Ilooked at it from the supicious view that these people needed to be seen doing what their doing so as not to be reported AWOL from their workspace. Then I looked at it from the owners view and decided it was their fault using their patrons as free advertising of how bad and how good their facilities.

  2. Good excuse to be AWOL, free advertising......all true. I'm still going to close my eyes when I pass these places - especially the gym. It's not that I feel guilty for not exercising........ :)

  3. I always try to look away when I see the big glaring long line of glass with all sorts of people exercising. It makes ME think of hamsters on their little wheels, personally.

I think there are lots of things we really ought to keep to ourselves, that's only one of them. :)

  4. Hamsters! LOL! Now I'll think of that every time I pass the gym :)
