The Sketchbook Project

Last year I had a lot of fun participating in the Sketchbook Project. As they say on their site, “It’s like a concert tour but with sketchbooks”.

Anyone can participate by sending for the sketchbook to be filled in any way you please. Drawing, painting, photographs, collage…..the choice is yours.

Your first step is to select a theme. Last year I chose “Secret Codes” and collaged my way through the pages. I based my codes on the “Caesar Cipher” a very simple cipher for secret communication. It’s basically substituting each letter of the alphabet with a letter xxx positions further along (you choose how many positions which is the tricky part). I cheated. I used an on-line cipher tool to make the process easier and I put the answers in the back of the book.

Each year there are different themes to choose from but sign up early or the theme you want may no longer be available. (Registration is $25.00 which includes the cost of your book).

Once your book is complete, you return it and all the works tour galleries and museums throughout North America, ending up at the Brooklyn Art Library.  This project is especially tempting if your city is on the tour agenda!*

Anyone can participate, there is no jury, and it's a fun project.  Take a look!
