|Our house isn't quite this crooked!|
There was a crooked man and he walked a crooked mile,
He found a crooked sixpence upon a crooked stile.
He bought a crooked cat, which caught a crooked mouse.
And they all lived together in a little crooked house!
The lovely old house we live in is getting more and more crooked. I can feel my leg muscles improving as I walk uphill from the living room to the bedroom. While a free workout at home is good, I’m not always in the mood for the uphill climb. We rent, which in this case is a good thing seeing as the foundation is a problem (but not ours).
Built around 1920, this house was originally in the middle of a quiet neighborhood street. With changes over the years, the street was cut in half and the house is now at the end of the block with a highway passing by. No wonder the poor house is slanting !
I’ve been thinking about how all living creatures adapt to their environment and this has me wondering - maybe my right leg has grown to compensate for the slanted floors and now I’m lopsided! Same with my arms. Depending on where I stand, it’s a further reach up or down using one arm or the other.
Oh oh. Maybe that’s why I have trouble finding pants and sleeves that are the right length. I hope I’m not evolving backwards and turning into a chimp! The chimp would be bad enough, but the orangutan would really upset me! (Is there such a word as de-volving? If not, there should be).
We have several options going. We can get special shoes made - one heel higher than the other. Or, we can layer carpets, heavier on one side than the other. Or, we can just look for another place to live come spring. Decision made! We'll let you know where we end up!
