Awesome

SOMEONE BETTER BE THINKING
UP NEW WORDS!
When did the word 'AWESOME' become 'awesome'?

Definition of awesome:
  • Inspiring awe:  an awesome sight
  • Showing or characterized by awe

Definition of awe:
  • An overwhelming feeling of reverence, admiration, fear, etc. produced by that which is grand, sublime, extremely powerful, or the like:  in awe of God.

So I have to ask, how did awesome suddenly become a word meaning good, very good, not bad, ok, suit yourself, whatever......

"I'm going to the bathroom now"
Awesome

"How's the coffee here?"
Awesome

"My headache is gone"
Awesome

"How was your day?"
Awesome

How did it happen?  How did a very capable word get distorted like this?  It already had  a truly important meaning in our vernacular.

What if, in front on an autumn sunset, aliens land, bringing peace and harmony to the world?

Awesome.  Same as a cup of coffee.

All I'm saying is we need a replacement word.  Who's in charge?

  2. Great post!

Language is a funny thing and almost always evolves into something out of context or absrtact...think of words from the 60s "bad, cool, far out", etc. Some still used, all out of context.

I love language and I am glad you do as well.

    I vote...YOU are in charge :)

    Be well,
    Ron

  3. Thanks for your confidence Ron. I'll try to find a far out, cool word to replace 'awesome'. I look forward to reading your blogs.
